What an amazing book! I was hooked from the very beginning as I started this book—I loved The Family Upstairs and Lisa Jewell did not disappoint with this sequel!!!

I think I really should have read The Family Upstairs before embarking on this。 However, there were enough pointers to fill me on what had happened previously。 Set against a backdrop of the discovery of human remains in the Thames, The Family Remains is the sequel to The Family Upstairs - a 'what happened next' to the characters。 Switching between them and on different timelines, it's a cleverly written novel which finishes with one character just as something dramatic happens。 The story kept my I think I really should have read The Family Upstairs before embarking on this。 However, there were enough pointers to fill me on what had happened previously。 Set against a backdrop of the discovery of human remains in the Thames, The Family Remains is the sequel to The Family Upstairs - a 'what happened next' to the characters。 Switching between them and on different timelines, it's a cleverly written novel which finishes with one character just as something dramatic happens。 The story kept my interest, it was quirky and different, but nonetheless very enjoyable。 My curiosity is such that I'm tempted to go back and read The Family Upstairs in order to uncover the whole story。My thanks to Lisa Jewell, Penguin Random House and NetGalley for an ARC of The Family Upstairs in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

This requested, hotly anticipated sequel to the unforgettable The Family Upstairs lives up to the hype。 It is superbly executed with several twists and turns and a compelling cast of old and new characters to savour。Rachel’s harrowing relationship with Michael is crafted with great insight and tremendous sensitivity。 I love how the seemingly disparate stories from the present involving Rachel, Lucy, Libby, Henry and Phil are woven together seamlessly with the past in alternating timelines。Together they create added depth and texture to the narrative and provide another layer of comprehension to what really happened many years ago。 Events might be escapable, and memory an unreliable witness, yet the family are still held hostage to the past。DCI Osuwu is focused on solving the bag of bones dredged from the river Thames mystery but is soon caught up with trying to unravel its links to the previous inhabitants of number 16 Cheyne Walk and the people they love。The investigation provokes fear and anxiety in those who know what occurred in that house but would rather keep it covered up。 Are they about to be found out or not? A compulsive read and a brilliant psychological thriller。 Grateful thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for the eARC。 。。。more

I loved The Family Upstairs and was really excited to read this sequel。 They say it’s a standalone but I recommend reading The Family Upstairs first to understand the characters and family dynamics that carry over into this book。 I read the first book over a year ago and had to google a bit to refresh my memory of what took place。 The pace was very slow and each chapter skipped around with different characters and timelines。 Some characters were from the first book and some were new。 It was hard I loved The Family Upstairs and was really excited to read this sequel。 They say it’s a standalone but I recommend reading The Family Upstairs first to understand the characters and family dynamics that carry over into this book。 I read the first book over a year ago and had to google a bit to refresh my memory of what took place。 The pace was very slow and each chapter skipped around with different characters and timelines。 Some characters were from the first book and some were new。 It was hard to keep track of what was going on and because of the slow pace I was beginning to not care。 I put it down for a while and read other things。 I eventually came back to this and stuck it out to the end。 It wound up all coming together in a satisfying way but it just moved too slow to be enjoyable。 。。。more

I liked the original family upstairs and was so pleased and intrigued to find out their was a sequel。 It might be because I usually like Lisa Jewell’s books and I had quite high expectations but I did struggle a bit with this book。 I liked how the story rounded off and the plot was interesting but not a great deal happened for the first 75% of the book。 I found myself putting off finishing it and then raced through the last bit。 I thought that there were a few stretches of the imagination making I liked the original family upstairs and was so pleased and intrigued to find out their was a sequel。 It might be because I usually like Lisa Jewell’s books and I had quite high expectations but I did struggle a bit with this book。 I liked how the story rounded off and the plot was interesting but not a great deal happened for the first 75% of the book。 I found myself putting off finishing it and then raced through the last bit。 I thought that there were a few stretches of the imagination making me struggle a bit more than I had with the first and that I felt undermined the plot。 I’m really glad I got to read it though and thank you to netgalley because I would have bought it otherwise。 。。。more

I mean, this was just GOOD。 A twisted family drama/thriller involving murder, abuse and hidden identity。 This book has the perfect eerie tone and slowly enfolds all of the interconnected stories/subplots as the book goes on and it is delectable to the very last page! This book opens with the discovery of a dead body and the re-opening of a twenty year old cold case。 The story then closely follows the lives of Rachel, Henry and Lucy。 Rachel has just married a seemingly perfect man named Michael。 I mean, this was just GOOD。 A twisted family drama/thriller involving murder, abuse and hidden identity。 This book has the perfect eerie tone and slowly enfolds all of the interconnected stories/subplots as the book goes on and it is delectable to the very last page! This book opens with the discovery of a dead body and the re-opening of a twenty year old cold case。 The story then closely follows the lives of Rachel, Henry and Lucy。 Rachel has just married a seemingly perfect man named Michael。 Henry has reconstructed his face and altered his appearance to be near identical to Phin (whose name he is also using) and Lucy is making ends meet whilst taking care of her children and making herself scarce。 I was so enthralled by all of their stories, especially Rachel’s (I was shocked and horrified by many moments in her story line)。 *Please note, I think it’s very important to give a TW for sexual assault for this book。 If this is something you are sensitive to, I wouldn’t recommend。。*This book is advertised as a standalone and I have not read the first book (though I will now immediately be doing that) but it seems that in this case it may be helpful, as I felt I was missing some important background details that a reader who has read book one wouldn’t be missing。 I will probably re-read this after I finish The Family Upstairs and I’m sure I will pick up some additional details。 Lisa Jewell can write one hell of a thriller!! 5 stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Thank you to NetGalley and Atria books for the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book。 I made。 a huge mistake and read the reviews and was so excited。 They all kept talking about the ending and how they didn't see it coming。 The book was very confusing to me。 I had to refer back to the cast of characters that is in the front of the book。 It kept going back and forth。 It was a good story, but wasn't my favorite Lisa Jewell book。 The twist at the end was good, but I was set up for something crazy。 It was a solid read and most people will Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of this book。 I made。 a huge mistake and read the reviews and was so excited。 They all kept talking about the ending and how they didn't see it coming。 The book was very confusing to me。 I had to refer back to the cast of characters that is in the front of the book。 It kept going back and forth。 It was a good story, but wasn't my favorite Lisa Jewell book。 The twist at the end was good, but I was set up for something crazy。 It was a solid read and most people will like it, I just didn't like being confused。 。。。more

While I loved The Family Upstairs, I don't see the necessity of the coming of this book。 The Family Remains is more like a character-study fiction than a thriller/mystery since it lacks the trists and even thrills。 Although this is a quick read and the writing is quite neat, I won't recommend it to anyone except the fan of The Family Upstairs。 While I loved The Family Upstairs, I don't see the necessity of the coming of this book。 The Family Remains is more like a character-study fiction than a thriller/mystery since it lacks the trists and even thrills。 Although this is a quick read and the writing is quite neat, I won't recommend it to anyone except the fan of The Family Upstairs。 。。。more

I absolutely loved The Family Upstairs so I was super excited to hear that Lisa was writing a sequel to it, and holy moly it was just as brilliant with lots of twists and turns that I didn’t see coming! I was a huge fan of The Family Upstairs and was expecting a lot from this sequel。 I am very happy to say that I was not disappointed。 The Family Remains picked up pretty much right from where the first book left off, at the same breakneck speed with the same intriguing characters and, best of all, with some new ones added into the mix。 This time around Libby and friends were more secondary characters and Henry and Lucy were more to the forefront along with Lucy’s ex-husband’s wife Rachel。 There I was a huge fan of The Family Upstairs and was expecting a lot from this sequel。 I am very happy to say that I was not disappointed。 The Family Remains picked up pretty much right from where the first book left off, at the same breakneck speed with the same intriguing characters and, best of all, with some new ones added into the mix。 This time around Libby and friends were more secondary characters and Henry and Lucy were more to the forefront along with Lucy’s ex-husband’s wife Rachel。 There was also the added jeopardy in the form of a determined police detective investigating a murder associated with the family home。 This book did an excellent job tying up the story from the first book。 By the end, there was a definite sense of closure。 I did feel, however, that maybe things were tied up a little too neatly。 I was happy for everyone, but it seemed a little too tidy; a little too fast。 My copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 My thanks to the the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review it。 。。。more

I couldn’t wait to read this sequel to The Family Upstairs and it didn’t disappoint。 The Family Remains catches up with the family and some of their actions left hanging in the first book。 I found it reasonably easy to pick up from the first book and enjoyed the introduction of some new characters, particularly DCI Samuel Owusu。 I loved the gripping and fast-paced plot and the Lucy/ Rachel storyline。 Thanks to NetGalley and Random House UK Cornerstone for the review access。

I’ve been asked how it compares。 Well, this one is more of a police detective investigation than book 1。 Where it was dark and full of horror, this one is more of an examination of what went wrong and how they have coped since。 There’s a new character that blends in well with the original cast。 Don’t let Lisa Jewell tell you this is the end - there’s definitely more to Henry than meets the eye。 We just might need to give the author time to ‘percolate’ and see that she really does want to write a trilogy!
